숨의 지형도 Breath Topography: 숨결이 그려내는 감각의 지도

어떤 풍경은 지도로 기록되지 않는다. 그곳에는 시간의 결을 따라 흐르는 숨결, 고요 속에 잠긴 침묵, 반복되는 일상과 그 사이에 스며드는 틈이 있다. 눈에 보이지 않는 이 풍경은, 지도 위 좌표로 표시되지 않는 영역에 속한다. 《숨의 지형도》는 바로 이 영역을 가시화하는 시도이다.

이번 전시는 ‘숨’이라는 단어에서 출발한다. 숨은 생명을 유지하는 가장 단순하고도 필수적인 리듬이자, 우리가 거의 의식하지 않은 채 반복하는 행위이며, 때로는 마음을 지탱하는 은밀한 힘이다. 숨의 흐름은 관계를 거치며 다른 이의 호흡과 맞물리고, 장소와 기억 속에 스며들어 새로운 층위를 만든다. 여섯 명의 작가—김형주, 서원미, 유창창, 윤상윤, 표영실, 홍정욱—는 이 ‘숨’을 각자의 시선과 매체를 통해 호출하며, 서로의 감각과 시간, 기억을 한 화면 위에 포개어 놓는다. 그렇게 완성된 지도는 단일한 길을 안내하는 것에 그치지 않고, 감정과 기억, 회복과 돌봄이 얽혀 있는 다층적 경로를 드러낸다.

김형주는 반복되는 행위와 패턴 속에서 발견되는 미세한 떨림을 화면 위에 담는다. 동양화적 구성 안에서 무수히 포개진 선들은 일상적 시간의 층위를 형성하며, 단조로움 속의 미묘한 파동을 시각화한다. 그의 화면은 관람자의 호흡을 천천히 풀어내며, 무심한 반복 속에 숨어 있던 감각을 되살린다.

서원미는 언어로는 완전히 붙잡히지 않는 정서를 포착한다. 화면 속 파편화된 서사는 때로는 이미지와 말 사이를 떠돌며, ‘말할 수 없음’ 자체를 드러낸다. 개인적인 기억은 은유적 형태로 부유하다가, 어느 순간 보편적인 감정의 장으로 연결된다. 관람자는 그의 작업 앞에서 오래 머물며, 말로 표현하기 어려운 감정의 결을 따라가게 된다.

유창창은 내면의 기억과 외부 세계의 이미지를 교차시키며, 애니메이션적 상상력을 회화에 접목한다. 그의 화면 속 장면들은 익숙하면서도 기묘한 분위기를 풍기며, 웃음과 불안, 서정과 비판이 동시에 배치된다. 이 대비는 무겁고 가벼운 감정의 경계를 아슬아슬하게 넘나들게 하고, 관객을 낯설고도 친숙한 감각 속으로 끌어들인다.

윤상윤은 회화의 여백과 리듬을 통해 ‘보이지 않는 흐름’을 그린다. 재즈의 즉흥성과 구조를 차용한 그의 작업은 반복과 일탈, 규칙과 무질서가 공존하는 시각적 악보처럼 보인다. 화면 위의 기호들은 단순한 형태를 넘어 숨결의 음계처럼 작동하며, 관람자로 하여금 침묵의 소리를 상상하게 한다.

표영실은 감정을 물질로 변환하는 화법을 구사한다. 겹겹이 쌓인 얇은 색의 결은 피부에 스며드는 온기처럼 화면 위에 퍼지고, 무심한 붓질조차 감정의 결을 띤다. 그의 회화는 조용하지만 분명한 울림을 남기며, 관객에게 감각의 미세한 결을 따라가도록 이끈다.

홍정욱은 구조와 해체를 반복하며 일상과 비일상의 경계를 허문다. 영상, 설치, 입체적 구성 등 매체 간 경계를 넘나드는 작업 방식은 익숙한 시공간을 새롭게 조립하고, 보이는 것 너머에 숨겨진 질서를 탐색하게 한다. 그의 작업은 관객의 인식을 흔들며, 우리가 놓치고 있던 구조의 층위를 드러낸다.

일상의 반복 속에서 우리의 감각은 무뎌지고, 관계는 점점 멀어진다. 그러나 숨은 여전히 흐르고 있다. 《숨의 지형도》는 잊고 있던 흐름을 다시 일깨운다. 우리는 서로 다른 호흡이 겹치고 어우러져서 만들어진 또 하나의 새로운 풍경을 마주하게 된다. 조용히 포개진 감정과 시간이 화면 위에 쌓이며, 하나의 완결된 감각의 지형으로 서서히 모습을 드러낸다. 그것은 좌표로 기록할 수 없는, 그러나 분명히 느낄 수 있는 또 하나의 풍경이다.

Breath Topography: A Sensory Map Drawn by Breathing

Some landscapes cannot be charted on a map. There, one finds breath flowing along the grain of time, silence sinking into stillness, and interludes seeping into the repetitions of daily life. These invisible terrains belong to a realm that cannot be marked by coordinates. Breath Topography is an attempt to make this very realm visible.

This exhibition begins with the word “breath.” Breath is the most basic and essential rhythm of life—an act we repeat unconsciously, yet one that sustains us. At times, it becomes a discreet yet resilient force that supports the heart. The flow of breath crosses through relationships, interweaves with the breath of others, and seeps into places and memories to create new layers. The six participating artists—Kim Hyungjoo, Seo Wonmi, Yoo Changchang, Yoon Sangyoon, Pyo Youngsil, and Hong Jungouk—summon this “breath” through their own perspectives and mediums, layering their sensations, times, and memories upon a shared surface. The resulting map does not guide a single route but reveals a multilayered path where emotion, memory, recovery, and care intertwine.

Kim Hyungjoo captures subtle tremors discovered within repetitive actions and patterns. Countless overlapping lines within an East Asian compositional framework form strata of everyday time, visualizing delicate vibrations within monotony. His canvases gradually release the viewer’s breath, reviving dormant senses hidden in repetition.

Seo Wonmi grasps emotions that cannot be fully held by language. Fragmented narratives drift between image and text, exposing the very condition of “unspeakability.” Personal memories float in metaphorical forms until, at certain moments, they connect to a field of shared emotion. In front of her works, viewers linger, tracing the textures of feelings that resist expression.

Yoo Changchang intersects inner memories with images of the external world, blending an animation-like imagination with painting. The scenes in his canvases feel both familiar and uncanny, holding humor and unease, lyricism and critique at once. This contrast precariously crosses the boundary between heavy and light emotions, drawing the audience into a sense that is both strange and familiar.

Yoon Sangyoon depicts “invisible flows” through rhythm and pause in painting. Borrowing the improvisation and structure of jazz, his works resemble visual scores where repetition and deviation, order and disorder coexist. The signs on his canvases function like scales of breath, prompting viewers to imagine the sound of silence.

Pyo Youngsil transforms emotion into matter. Layers of delicate color spread across the surface like warmth seeping into the skin, while even the most casual brushstrokes carry the grain of feeling. Her paintings leave a quiet yet resonant echo, inviting viewers to follow the minute textures of sensation.

Hong Jungouk repeatedly constructs and dismantles, dissolving the boundary between the everyday and the extraordinary. By shifting across media—video, installation, and three-dimensional composition—his works reassemble familiar spaces, urging us to search for hidden structures beyond what is visible. His practice unsettles perception, revealing strata of order we might have overlooked.

In the repetition of daily life, our senses grow dull and our relationships drift apart. Yet breath continues to flow. Breath Topography reawakens this forgotten current. Here we encounter a landscape formed as different breaths overlap and intertwine. As quietly layered emotions and time accumulate on the surface, the exhibition gradually takes shape as a complete topography of sensation. It is a landscape that cannot be recorded by coordinates, yet one that can be unmistakably felt.
